Cobbtown UMC - Northeast
History
On June 1, 1897, in a tent revival in Quince, Georgia (later to become Cobbtown) five charter members formed a church. They were Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Davis, their daughter, and Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Bowen. The land for the church was given by Jesse Cobb and the first pastor was Rev. C. B. Cashwell. In 1897, the first church building and parsonage were built. The church was known as Quince Mission in the Dublin District. In 1898, the first Sunday school was organized and the first revival held. In 1908, the parsonage burned down and, in early 1910, the old church was dismantled.
In 1911, through the efforts of H. J. Mulling, G. W. Mulling, and J. I. Davis, the present church was erected. In the 1920s, a youth league was organized by Miss Lottie Mulling and the church had its first wedding when Pearl Collins married Joe Frazer. The church had services one afternoon a month sometimes with fewer than ten members present. In 1939, the parsonage burned down but a new one wasn't constructed until 1948. In 1943, the first baby to be baptized at Cobbtown was Marvin Moxley. In 1953, an educational building was completed thanks to a generous donation by Mrs. C. M. Moxley. A new sanctuary was built adjoining the new educational building in 1965. A new parsonage was completed in 1970, and, in 1974, a fellowship hall added. Most of the construction was done by church member E. J. Collins.
The parsonage burned again in the early 1990s but a new one was constructed and dedicated to E. J. Collins. In 1997, the church celebrated its 100th anniversary and had its first female pastor in Rev. Evelyn Duvall.
In 1902, Rev. Thomas Williams was pastor of the Quince Circuit, Dublin District at which time the Collins church was organized. In 1919, Cobbtown Circuit, McRae District had five churches with Rev. J. E. Channell as pastor. In 1940, Cobbtown was put on the Tattnall Circuit, Savannah District and, in 1968, Cobbtown-Collins was placed with Roxie Memorial in the Statesboro District.
