Christ UMC (Warner Robins) - North Central
History
This church is the result of combined efforts of the three Methodist churches of Warner Robins, First, Trinity, and Northview. Rev. Carlton Carruth, Conference Director of Church Extension, purchased land with Kingdom Builder funds. A modular building was designed, built, transported to the site, and bolted together to form a unit containing classrooms, pastor's study, social hall, and restrooms. A mobile trailer equipped as a sanctuary was given by Hawkinsville Methodists. The first service was held on April 30, 1972, and Dr. G. Ross Freeman, District Superintendent, presided while Rev. Charles "Buddy" Conway preached. The church was constituted on May 21, 1972, with fifty-three members. The first services were held in the first permanent unit on March 17, 1974.
The new sanctuary was completed for 550 people, with choir space for 50, narthex, a bride's room, a groom's room, a mezzanine, and restrooms. In the fall of 1989, through the hard work of Anne Bilski, a pre-kindergarten school was started with thirteen teachers and two hundred students. In 1993, the kitchen was enlarged, stainless steel sinks and oak cabinets installed, new flooring laid and new doors added. The mid-1990s, saw the completion of a new Sunday school annex, which runs parallel to the original buildings. The outreach programs geared towards members and the community are strong and well attended. Groups include UMW, UMM, Youth Groups, Blood Drives, and Nursery Schools.
In 2014, the sanctuary was renovated with a generous gift from Harriet Haggard Bean, who passed away on January 6, 2013. A committee selected lighting, furniture, and carpet while maintaining a focus on the beautiful stained-glass windows and cross. Audio renovations and a welcome station in the narthex were made possible. The exterior of the church was painted and landscaping was completed. The 2016-2017 school year will be the last time the Christ UMC's school is located on the church campus. The school is moving to a new location that can better accommodate its needs.
