The South Georgia Conference welcomes Kara Witherow, a United Methodist with extensive experience in communications, as the editor of the South Georgia Advocate. Kara has worked in the media relations, public relations and marketing fields, having worked for Gaylord Entertainment in Nashville, Tenn. (parent company of the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center) and the Sea Island Company in St. Simons Island. She holds a degree in journalism from the University of Mississippi, where she was a staff writer for the Daily Mississippian newspaper. She and her husband, Patrick, reside in Brunswick, and are members of The Chapel. 

For 172 years, the Wesleyan Christian Advocate informed United Methodists in Georgia and celebrated the church, its people and its mission. Since 1837, United Methodists throughout Georgia have turned to the Advocate to read stories of how God is working in the lives of His churches and His people and to stay informed of news and events within the conference. These things readers have come to expect and rely upon will not change.     

 

In the summer of 2009, the Wesleyan Christian Advocate dissolved and created an opportunity for the South Georgia Conference and the North Georgia Conference to begin producing their own publications.  

 

The South Georgia Conference entered a partnership with the United Methodist Reporter our of Dallas, TX to create a new South Georgia Advocate.  In addition to readers being able too keep up with the happenings in South Georgia, through the United Methodist Reporter, readers also receive important connectional news and developments from across the nation and the world. 

 

In February 2011, the South Georgia Advocate began on online version, providing the South Georgia section at no charge.
